The Second Edition of the Course: Introduction to Space Engineering has started by Prof. Arcia, at the School of Electronics, University Santa Maria la Antigua, Panama

In coordination with Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) the course will be open and virtual to students from other universities and high schools students

Guest Lecture – Tecnologico Costa Rica: Space Communications(Part-1)

As part of the course “Introduction to Space Systems” taught by Prof.  Adolfo Chaves at Tecnologico de  Costa Rica (TEC), I was invited to present a remote guest lecture on “Space Communications”.

The Part-1 of this lecture was related to Satellite Applications for Earth observation, navigation, Space exploration, and communications.

The Part-2 will be related to  Communication subsystem design for small-satellites, emphasizing on Antenna Desing/simulation and Link Budget Analysis.

Guest Lecture: Attitude and Orbital Control Systems(AOCS)

As part of the Course: Introduction to Space Engineering of Universidad Católica Santa María La Antigua, we had the Guest Lecture “Attitude and Orbital Control Systems(AOCS)” by Prof. Adolfo Chaves Jimenez

Dr. Chaves is conducting a PhD in Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft  and is currently a  Professor of Introduction to Space System at Space System Laboratory, Electronic School,  Tecnologico de Costa Rica (TEC) and coordinator of SETEC Lab – Laboratorio de Sistemas Espaciales

During this remote session, students from Costa Rica and Panama were able to learn about the orbit estimation subsystem, magnetorquers, thrusters and other mechanisms for spacecraft control.

Guest Lecture: Onboard Computers. Evolution, Challenges and New Applications

As part of the Course: Introduction to Space Engineering of Universidad Católica Santa María La Antigua, we had the Guest Lecture “Onboard Computers. Evolution, Challenges and New Applications” by Dr. Johan Carvajal-Godínez.

Dr. Carvahal-Godínez is an Electronics Engineer with a Master on Manufacturing Systems,  PhD in Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft. His PhD topic focused on fault detection, isolation and recovery software architectures for GNC computers, with a wide experience in computer systems design, including embedded systems and supercomputer architectures. He is currently a  Professor of Introduction to Space System at Space System Laboratory, Electronic School,  Tecnologico de Costa Rica (TEC)

Remote attendees: Students from Costa Rica and Panama

Guest Lecture: Microwave Technologies for Space Applications

As part of the Course: Introduction to Space Engineering of Universidad Católica Santa María La Antigua, we had the Guest Lecture “Microwave Technologies for Space Applications” by Dr. Carlos A. Donado Morcillo, Adjunct Professor at USMA. Dr. Donado is a Senior Engineer at Nanowave Technologies with a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Donado designs and develops state-of-the-art, high power microwave/RF components for aerospace applications. Several students from Costa Rica and Panama who attended this remote Lecture were able to learn about new communication networks based on LEO satellite networks and the current technological challenges faced by space microwave systems.

Georgia Tech´s small-satellite Prox-1 Launches from Kennedy Space Center

Prox-1 is a small Satellite developed by Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) will demonstrate proximity operations for space situational awareness, through the use of a low thrust propulsion system for orbital maneuvering, and visible and infrared imaging for reconnaissance.

I had the opportunity to work in the  COMM sub-system in 2013-2014, calculating Link-Budget and analyzing antenna radiation pattern.

The 154-pound Prox-1 was one of 24 cubesats that hitched a ride on the Falcon Heavy — the world’s most powerful operational rocket. Once it is deployed from its rideshare, Prox-1 will embark on its own mission:  to deploy LightSail-a solar-powered sailing satellite developed by the Planetary Society.

The Course Introduction to Space Engineering just started at University Santa Maria la Antigua (USMA), School of Electronics as an elective course. This is the first course of it kinds in Central America.

This Course is intended to explain several introductory concepts of Space Industry and an Overview of Space Exploration with a historical background from the launch of Sputnik in 1957 to the Current Private development by companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin,  Space Agencies like NASA, ESA, among others.

We will emphasize on current trends: Mars Exploration, Small-Satellite developments and how USMA and Panama could contribute and participate in collaborative projects with other universities in the Central America region.
